The only A-League franchise not based in Australia, Wellington Phoenix have not had much success since their debut in 2007, as they have never been in the championship or Australian Cup finals.
This season, however, might be different. While Phoenix’s adventures in the Cup ended in a Round of 16 loss to Melbourne City, New Zealand’s finest are tied for first in the regular season standings in A-League. There is still a date remaining with Central Coast Mariners in April, but as long as Phoenix take care of business, it should be the best finish ever in the short history of the club.

On the other side on the pitch in Auckland on Saturday will be the most storied A-League franchise. Five championship wins, four Premierships given to the best regular season squad, two wins in Australia Cup - noone has yet won more than Sydney FC.
Even this season, despite struggling in the middle of the pack, Sydney took home the Cup, as they survived a thrilling penalty shootout against Central Coast Mariners in Round of 32 before sweeping through the bracket. Winning the trophy gave them a guaranteed spot in the Finals series, but with 7 games remaining, it is time to get in the optimal conditions for the playoffs.
